What is a podcast?

A podcast is a collection of Web-based digital media (e.g., audio, video) to which users can subscribe, thereby receiving new media content as it becomes available. The subscription functionality is made possible by a technology called Really Simple Syndication (RSS).

The individual media files that make up a podcast are often referred to as episodes. Additional episodes are added to a podcast overtime, just as shows are added to a radio program.

Other terms for a podcast include "netcast" and "vodcast (video).

What is the MC Podcast Builder?

The primary purpose of the MC Podcast Builder is to make it easy for MC faculty and staff to store audio/video files that they create and want to make into a podcast. They can use the MC Podcast Builder to make a number of podcasts and to generate an RSS feed for each (the RSS feed is what enables users to subscribe to a podcast). MC faculty and staff can use the MC Podcast Builder to submit their podcasts for display in the MC Podcast Directory and/or Montgomery College on iTunes U (not live yet). The MC Podcast Builder does not create the audio/video files.

Students can make their own audio/video files as part of a project, submit them to their instructor, and using the MC Podcast Builder, the instructor can post them as part of a course podcast.

What specific information and files do I need to have ready before I create a podcast using the MC Podcast Builder?

In addition to having an account on the MC Podcast Builder, you will need to have the following information and files ready:

  • Summary information about your podcast (e.g., title, subtitle, summary, description, author)
  • A cover art image (.jpg)
  • At least one audio (.mp3) or video (.flv, .mp4, .m4v, .wmv) file to use as your first episode (300 MB limit)
  • Summary information about each episode in your podcast (e.g., title, subtitle, summary, author, keywords)

What size and format is required for my podcast cover art image?

For each podcast, you must submit a cover art image in .jpg format. The recommend file size to upload is under 100K. The MC Podcast Builder will resize your image as needed.

top

What size and format is required for each of my podcast episode files?

The maximum file size for each upload is 300 MB.

Audio-only file: .mp3 format

Video file: .flv, .mp4, .m4v OR .wmv format. The suggested video dimensions are 320 x 240.

Is there a suggested length for each podcast episode?

There is no time limit for the length of a podcast episode. This allows you to determine the appropriate length for your episode based on the purpose, targeted audience, context, etc. Keep in mind that the longer your episode, the larger your file size will be. Each upload must be under 300 MB.

Each upload must be 300 MB or smaller.

You can decrease the quality of your audio/video episode in order to make the file size smaller.

top

The files that you submit using the MC Podcast Builder are stored on a Montgomery College server dedicated for this purpose – the MC podcasting server. The files are regularly backed up by MC Information Technology staff.

If you choose to display your podcast on Montgomery College on iTunes U (not yet live), a copy of the podcast is made and that copy is stored on the Apple server.

top

How long are podcast files retained on the MC podcasting server?

Each audio/video file you submit as part of a podcast on the MC Podcast Builder will remain on the server
until you remove it.

What is the MC Podcast Directory?

The general public can search and browse the MC Podcast Directory for MC-related podcasts. The directory lists MC-related podcasts created by faculty and staff (podcasts marked as "hidden" by their owners are not listed, but may be made available to a target audience through a direct link provided by the owner of the podcast).

From the MC Podcast Directory, you can subscribe to podcasts using any feed reader or podcatcher. Or, you can play individual audio/video files by using the playback controls provided (or by downloading the files to your computer).

What is Montgomery College on iTunes U?

Montgomery College on iTunes U is not yet live.

Montgomery College has chosen to use Montgomery College on iTunes U as a directory of MC-related podcasts, like the MC Podcasting Directory. By using Montgomery College on iTunes U, you are using iTunes as your podcatcher.

Although iTunes U does have an interface for podcast owners (MC faculty and staff) to upload individual audio/video files to Montgomery College on iTunes U, at Montgomery College we have chosen not to turn that function on, as the MC Podcast Builder streamlines this procedure for us.

Why list podcasts in multiple directories?

Podcast owners may choose to list their podcasts in multiple directories (MC Podcast Directory, Montgomery College on iTunes U, and others) to more widely advertise their podcast.

Montgomery College on iTunes U (not yet live) is a small segment of the entire iTunes U directory, which lists podcasts from various educational institutions. Many people around the world use iTunes U to find education-related podcasts, including MC podcasts.

Although the MC Podcast Directory is not as widely known, it is a valuable tool for subscribing to a podcast using your choice of a feed reader or podcatcher (you are not limited to using only the iTunes podcatcher with the MC Podcast Directory). The MC Podcast Directory also makes it easy to play audio/video files using playback controls (or directly download them to your computer).

At present, you will need to create a new podcast using the MC Podcast Builder and upload each of the media files in your existing podcast. I only want my podcast to be accessed by a small group of people (e.g., my students, my staff, etc.), not the general public. How do I share my podcast with this group?

When you create your podcast, on the Create New Podcast page of the MC Podcast Builder, do not select to display it on the MC Podcast Directory or on Montgomery College on iTunes U (not live yet), as these directories are accessible to the general public.

Podcast Directories option

Instead, go to the Welcome page in the MC Podcast Builder and click on the name of the podcast that you would like to share.

Welcome page in MC Podcast Builder

If you want your small group to subscribe to your podcast you will need to share the podcast's RSS feed with them:

On the Managing Podcast page, right-click the RSS feed link and Select Copy Shortcut to copy the Web address of your podcast feed.

Managing Podcast page on MC Podcast Builder

Paste the link in an email to the desired recipients or post it on a password-protected Web site for them to access. They will then paste the link in iTunes or another podcatcher or feed reader to display the contents of the podcast.

If you want your small group to access a single audio/video file that is part of your podcast, you will need to share the direct link to the media file:

On the Managing Podcast page, right-click the link to the media file and select Copy Shortcut to copy the Web address to this media file.

Manage episode

Paste the link in an email to the desired recipients or post it on a password-protected Web site for them to access. They can click the link and the media file will play on their computer.

Some possible places to paste links to share with members of your small group:

  • Email
  • "Links" section on your MyMC Course or Group site
  • Your WebCT course site
  • Password-protected Web site

Note: By sharing links using these methods, you are notifying only your small group of the location of your podcast feed or individual podcast files on the MC podcasting server. Technically your podcast feed or individual media files could be accessed by someone that you do not know, but since you have not advertised their location, it will be difficult for them to find them.

I thought Montgomery College on iTunes U had a built-in interface for storing and uploading my podcast files?

Although Montgomery College on iTunes U (not live yet) does have an interface for podcast owners to upload individual audio/video files, a decision was made not to use that function, as the MC Podcast Builder streamlines this procedure for us.

When Montgomery College on iTunes U goes live, it will be used as a directory of MC podcasts.

Where do I find out about recommended equipment, training, support, and other resources available?

See the About page for information on hardware and software, as well as support and training opportunities. Students creating audio/video files for a class project should contact their instructor for tools, assistance and training.

How do I post a transcript for a podcast episode?

The MC Podcast Builder accepts transcripts with the following file extensions: .txt, .doc, .rtf and .xml. The .txt format is recommended. Add your transcript on the Add Episode page of the MC Podcast Builder. Then the link to the transcript will appear, along with your media file, on the MC Podcast Directory.

top

How do I add captions to a video episode?

The MC Podcast Builder has built-in functionality to display captions on your video file in the MC Podcast Directory. To display captions, you need to prepare an xml file with the phrases/words in your video and the corresponding time stamps. View a sample xml file with time stamps.
