At the Colleges Closing Meeting in May we were happy to share a special video that highlighted three of our award-winning faculty members. Im very proud of our talented faculty, as I hope all of you are. Enjoy the video message, and take care. (Video plays) Susan Bontems: Im Professor Susan Bontems. I received the Maryland Professor of the Year award from the CASE and Carnegie Foundation. This is an award for excellence for teaching in the classroom, and contributions to education. I was nominated by Dean Kathy Michaelian. I have heard people say, although I find it inconceivable, that chemistry is not their favorite subject. I think everyone should love chemistry. But, you know, I feel like I should have something really profound to say about teaching philosophy but its really the basics. And I think about what went wrong on a class that I did the day before, or why did this student, you know, not do as well on the second exam as they did on the first, and try to decide how to reach out to that student in a constructive way. And so itsI think its reflecting a lot on how to engage students and being willing to take risks and possibly embarrass yourself. When I have a very quiet class, I tend to get wild and do funny voices and, you know, try to bring students out and try to get them involved, and sometimes incorporate what theyre telling me into my lectures. I love my job. We tell people, you know, we have the best jobs in the world. I spent some wonderful years in industry, but I love this. You know, in industry I got to travel, I got to, you know, do a lot of interesting things, I was paid well, but this the rewards are so much better, so much bigger. Tammy Peery: The recognition from the Maryland Distance Learning Association is a lovely recognition for me, but really what it is its a testament to the really amazing distance education program we have here at the College. We have tremendous training, instructional designers, and faculty members who are really dedicated to making this a great experience for students. And that is really what I am a product of, cause I certainly could not have done any of it by myself. Montgomery Colleges mission is to change lives, and distance education, moving forward, is really one of the best tools to do that. It allows us to provide access to as many students as possible in an environmentally-friendly way, it allows us to be able to teach more people that would not have other access otherwise, and in that way, distance education at Montgomery College really does change the lives of many students. New technologies allow instructors to meet with their students on a more synchronous basis, as well as in an asynchronous basis. And, in addition, it allows us to interact more directly with our students through videos, through podcasting, through, again, direct interaction with materials that students can give us when we can do screen captures and make notes directly on the screen and share them with students or with the class. So, it really is becoming a great opportunity for people to have the same level of interaction as a face-to-face class, but in an environment that allows them to meet their other busy schedule and work needs. Sharon Fechter: Hi. Im Sharon Ahern Fechter. Im the Professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of World Languages and Philosophy at the Rockville Campus of Montgomery College. Im proud to say that I have received the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Prestigious Award for Excellence in Teaching at the two-year college level. I feel very, very proud, but really I feel proud for Montgomery College. I think that the representation of community colleges at the national level in organizations such as mine is not what it should be. When you consider that we educate almost or in some years over half the undergraduate population in the United States of America, you have to see what a significant sector we are in undergraduate education. And so Im glad to be recognized this way by such an important association, but I think its more important that the College be recognized this way. And I appreciate the Colleges support of me and my professional activities. I do feel very fortunate that the College so actively supports the study of languages. We know how important that is in todays world. The global economy is the least of it its the intercultural understanding. Language and culture are absolutely inseparable. If you want to know about someones culture, learn his or her language.
